It was an early morning departure from Mangāmāunu on the 27th of July to make the 7 hour trip to Karitāne and Puketeraki marae amongst our Kāi Tahu whanaunga of Kāti Huirapa. Tā Tipene and matua Maurice Manawatu had all of us listening intently as we studied more of our ancestors movements from the north island to Kaikōura and onto the deep south. The haukāinga really took great care of us and it was sad to say “ka kite” to such a beautiful place on the Sunday afternoon. If the drive hadn’t have been so long I would have brought my babies with me. This was our third wānaka for the year with our next one taking place at the end of August in Arowhenua. I look forward to sharing some of our old kōrero with you all. “Kāi Tahu, māraka, māraka!” – Āku mihi, Korey.
